Our story

From the Khewra Salt Mine to Farms Across the USA

The story of salt licks at Khewra goes back a long way. Local legend says the salt was found around 326 BC, when horses traveling with Alexander the Great's army stopped to lick the rocks. Animals have been coming back to this salt ever since.

Our part of the story started in 2015, when we began buying Himalayan salt directly from the Khewra Salt Mine. Over time, farmers, horse owners and hunters kept asking us the same thing: could they get a plain, ready-to-hang salt lick, with no sugar or fillers, at a fair price and without waiting weeks for shipping?

That's what NutriSalt is. We keep the product simple, the prices clear, and the stock close to our customers in our Maryland warehouse.

How it's made

From Mine to Your Barn: How Every Salt Lick Is Made

There's no recipe and no mixing. Each NutriSalt block is a single piece of natural rock salt. Here's every step it takes before it reaches you.

  1. Mined at Khewra

Rock salt is mined from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan's Salt Range, the second-largest salt mine in the world.

  2. Cut to size

The salt is cut into solid blocks of 5–6 lb, 8–9 lb or 9–10 lb.

  3. Drilled and roped

Each block is drilled and fitted with a rope, so it's ready to hang.

  4. Checked by hand

We check every block for cracks and soft spots before it's packed. Blocks that don't pass don't ship.

  5. Stocked in Maryland

Blocks are stored in our Middle River, Maryland warehouse, close to our US customers.

  6. Shipped to you

Orders placed by 2 PM ET usually ship the same business day and arrive in 3 to 5 business days.

Is it really Himalayan salt? Yes. "Himalayan salt" is the common name for rock salt from Pakistan's Salt Range, which sits in the foothills south of the Himalayas. Khewra is the best-known source. The salt is mostly sodium chloride, with small natural traces of minerals like iron, which gives it its pink to reddish color. Color varies from block to block, which is normal for natural rock salt.

What you can count on

Three Promises We Keep

  1. Nothing added

Our salt licks are plain rock salt. No molasses, sugar, dye, binder, filler or added copper, ever. What's on the label is what's in the block.

  2. Honest guidance

We tell you what a salt lick does and what it doesn't. A salt block covers salt, not every mineral, and we'll say when your animals need something else or when to ask your vet.

  3. Real people

When you call or email, you reach our US-based team, Monday to Friday. Most emails get a reply within one business day.

What We Will and Won't Say About Our Salt

You'll see a lot of big claims about Himalayan salt online. We'd rather keep it simple and true, so you can trust what you read here.

We will tell you We won't claim
It's natural rock salt that covers your animals' daily salt need That it cures, treats or prevents disease
It contains small natural traces of minerals That those traces replace a proper mineral supplement
It's dense and lasts longer than most pressed blocks An exact number of months, since that depends on your animals and weather
It brings deer to a spot where licks are legal That it grows bigger antlers
When to call your vet That it's right for every animal in every situation

Our animal guides

How We Write Our Salt Lick Guides

Our horse, cattle, deer, goat and sheep pages are written to help you use salt the right way, not just to sell blocks. Here's how we keep them reliable:

  • We use trusted sources.University extension services (like University of Maryland, Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Oregon State), the National Research Council, and wildlife agencies.
  • We name our sourcesat the bottom of each guide, so you can check them yourself.
  • We stay in our lane.We sell salt, not veterinary care. For health questions, we point you to your vet.
  • We keep them current. Each guide shows a "last updated" date, and we review state rules for deer licks every season.

Who owns NutriSalt?

NutriSalt was founded by Muhammad Idrees Munir, who has worked with Himalayan salt for more than ten years. The company has bought its salt directly from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan since 2015, and ships orders from its own warehouse in Middle River, Maryland.

Where does NutriSalt's salt come from?

Our salt comes from the Khewra Salt Mine in the Salt Range of Punjab, Pakistan, the world's second-largest salt mine and the best-known source of Himalayan salt. We buy directly from the mine, then cut, rope and hand-check each block before it's shipped to our Maryland warehouse.

Is NutriSalt a US company?

Yes. NutriSalt stocks and ships every order from its warehouse at 1107 Middle River Rd #27, Middle River, Maryland. Our US-based team answers phone calls and emails Monday to Friday, and we ship to the contiguous United States.

Is NutriSalt Himalayan salt real?

Yes. Each block is a single piece of natural rock salt from Pakistan's Salt Range, the region that all genuine Himalayan salt comes from. It's mostly sodium chloride with small natural traces of minerals like iron, which gives it its pink color. Color varies from block to block, as it does with all natural rock salt.

Is anything added to NutriSalt salt licks?

No. Our salt licks are plain rock salt with a rope fitted. There's no molasses, sugar, dye, binder, filler or added copper. That makes them a simple choice for horses on low-sugar diets and for sheep, which are sensitive to copper.
